From the very first page, an heart-gathering blend of magic realism, memoir, poetry, and coming of age. Part I traces Stasha’s journey through the personal hell of teenage pregnancy in middle America. Dad was in prison when he died, and no one but Stasha seems to have any imagination. Her consolations are the forest and lake full of spirits and stories. Here we thought Little Red Riding Hood just a tale. “The belly it spits him out. His story flies It scatters like seed. His seeds they grow In love and trust....” Stasha flies her story to Moscow in Part II, a city and time controlled by the mafia’s black market, dormitory cockroaches, and Russian soul, or dusha. She’s female, of course. Stasha weaves her own folk-tale drenched in vodka, hunger, and passion. “I drink an entire bottle of vodka on Women’s Day without getting drunk, walk home in a dream and see that the city has been transformed by dawn, the buildings painted blush and wine. I see a man fall off a building and die. Nobody... More > does anything.” It’s a different voice by now--careworn like an old woman who’s been standing in bread lines, robbed by gypsies, and singing folksongs through the night. It all spirals into her epiphany of dusha before American steals her back. Teenagers will love this book, mostly written in an smart-alecky precocious teen voice that invites rebellion and understanding. Adults will appreciate the literary interplay. Stasha weaves in poetry and fairytales like a young Atwood or Erdrich. You’ll yearn for a little dusha.< Less
