In 1973, Melvin Wade, a self made millionaire, was hand picked by Ebony Magazine publisher Jim Johnson to be included in their '1000 Successful Blacks' volume as the only Black to own a rubber recycling plant in the country.
In 1978, Wade's factory experienced a tragedy that changed lives, fortunes, and government regulations forever. Toxic waste stored on his property sickened and later killed dozens of people who fought a fire at this factory. His business never recovered and families forever held him responsible for their grief. Environmental agencies created new laws and policies yet Melvin Wade was put in jail.
He has lived the past 30 years in and out of abandoned properties, shelters and on the street.
Was Wade set up to fail? Was he robbed of over a million dollars of capital equipment and property? Was he the fall guy for the corporations that put toxic waste on his site?
Read this amazing account of what happened from Melvin Wade himself.
You'll never forget it.
