May 28, 2009"Murder By Dewey Decimal" E.T.C. I found this book to be an excellent read. It is very well written and the characters really come to life as the story advances. It develops real suspense as you come to relate with and root for Barnard and Lisa. I like the setting in a smaller, more rural environment where a murder like this would rock the town to its foundation. Things like this do happen and the story is very believable and is also logical. I enjoyed trying to figure out the mystery before it is finally revealed in the end. I can't wait for the next one in the series!
Sep 13, 2008"Review by Jean S." (My friend Jean runs the blog Rantings and Ravings of an Insane Writer (www.mercuryranch.org/blog). She posted the following review on her blog and has allowed me to repost it here. Thanks, Jean!) Murder by Dewey Decimal by Stephen B. Bagley is engaging from the first sentence. It’s a cozy mystery suitable for all ages, but intended for adults. It has murder, romance, jealousy, and suspense. In fact, people keep winding up dead, and an old girlfriend reappears to complicate matters. In an interesting twist, the first victim, Agatha Ryton-Storer, was universally disliked, so that left a wide range of suspects for her murder in this quiet, small town. Things aren’t quite as they seem, and wrinkles keep appearing, ensuring the reader not only wonders, “What next?” but whether things will ever settle down. Things do eventually work out, but not without some tense moments. I can highly recommend this book as an enjoyable read. If you want to make sure, check... More > out the preview here. I think you’ll want to know more about what happens with Bernard and Lisa. It isn’t a book you’ll stumble upon in your local bookstore. You will be able to find it on Amazon and other on-line booksellers soon, but for now, you’ll only find it on Lulu.com in hard cover, trade paperback, or digital download (accessible via either of the previous links). Stephen has even created Murder by Dewey Decimal merchandise at Cafe Press, so check out what he has to offer over there. What follows is the story of how I came to recommend this book: I’d been idly following Tech’s posts about a book he was revising. Then he had a contest, and the contest required me to answer questions from the portions he’d excerpted. I’m still not keying in on the story. Then he emailed me and asked me to give it a once-over. See, he was self-publishing it, and he wouldn’t have the benefit of an editor or a team to find any errors, and he wanted it to be as good as possible before putting it out there. He’d heard I was good for this sort of thing, and would I be willing to help. Tech, aka Stephen B. Bagley, has been an on-line friend for a couple of years now, and I’ve noticed he writes very well. He’s humorous. He’s capable of putting together a solid story, and I wanted him to have the very best book possible. Without an editorial staff to help him (although he’d had some very competent friends critiquing the book before he sent it to me), I knew I might be able to make a difference, so I told him to go ahead and send it my way. When it arrived in my inbox, I was pleased to see it was nearly perfect. I found a few minor things to suggest (not much more than “happy” to “glad”), and passed the information back to Stephen. The first version that came to me was cleaner than some major publishing house novels I’ve read post-printing. I can’t find any of those things in the final published version, so Stephen, your editorial staff (before you came to me) is already top notch. Kudos to you and them for superb work. If you’re reading this and haven’t read Murder by Dewey Decimal yet, I urge you to give it a chance. This is a top quality story and an enjoyable read. - Jean S., September 2007< Less
