Abstract: In this essay, I investigate whether or not Kant’s conception of ‘duty’ in The Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals can be read as applicable in everyday life. My concern is with the appropriateness of a practical, commonsense approach to Kant’s Groundwork. I postulate that, although Kant begins the Groundwork with a “Transition from the Common Rational Knowledge of Morality to the Philosophical”, it would be a mistake for us to think that the underlying principles of morality are drawn from practical, or empirical, circumstances or sources, though the principles are eventually used (in The Metaphysic of Morals) in a practical manner. In fact, such an error would signify a gross misunderstanding of the overall Kantian project.
