Who Walks These Halls

This is a ghost story which takes place in the long-abandoned county hospital in Chicago. The plot has several compelling narrative threads leading to a powerful conclusion. Yes, there are ghosts in this saga. Most of them are sad and pitiful; a few of them are angry with power enough to scare. But there exists something else: one among them who is different; one who can physicalize; one who can reach out and brutally kill. This one is driven by absolute fury. Who was he in life? My novel is partially inspired by the 1956 classic film Forbidden Planet and The Tempest. These works both deal with a special person's ability to conjure up a lethal force by power of the mind alone. It deals with mysteries of the unconscious mind, what Freud called the superego. "I want ghosts who do things. I want real sepulchral ghosts, the kind that knock you over and eat fire . . . none of your weak, shallow apparitions." Theodore Roosevelt

May 22, 2016This was a great read from start to finish. I enjoyed the fact that it takes place in Chicago, since it's near and dear to my heart. It was also very interesting to read about the old Cook County Hospital, as there has been many stories over the years about that place. My favorite part honestly is the twist that you are not at all expecting at the end. It leaves you wondering if another book could be written to continue on the story. Great storyline, great characters.... It's a big book that seems like it will be too long, but once you get into it, it really is hard to put down.
Apr 20, 2016This book is definitely a page-turner! I never knew what was going to happen next, but loved every minute of it. Each chapter reveals layers of adventures within them. It is absolutely fascinating how the characters are brought to life. Standing ovation given to Stephen Houston!
Apr 20, 2016This thriller addresses the psychological aspect of fear and strikes it deep into your soul. It makes you question how brave you think you are, especially when it comes to trying to explain the unexplainable. Individuals will be drawn to how well Houston describes everything in great detail; the words are put together beautifully, even when describing something terrifying. Prepare to be transported!
Apr 19, 2016Who Walks These Halls is a thriller, a ghost story and a love story, all wrapped into one. Science fiction and horror will meet and create a captivating work of art. There is no specific genre for this book. It is way beyond that and certainly way beyond any "ghost story" I have ever read. The content can mean so many things to so many different readers. Stephen Houston is quite the writer. It is refreshing to finally read a book with substance, something that any reader can sink their teeth into and think about for a long time.
Apr 19, 2016The content from this book stayed with me, creeping into my mind and making me think. Amazing and spellbinding, all put together. Houston's descriptions are one of a kind. I never knew if I was going to jump out of my skin, laugh, cry or just sit back and appreciate all of what was going on. Who Walks These Halls made me do all of that, and it was worth it. This book has a rightful place on my bookcase, until I'm reading it again. I would highly recommend this book to others.
