This essential introduction for anyone interested in the nature of Mind and Consciousness was drawn from the notes for my Evening Classes, taught now for the past four years. But more than this it has been expanded into a potted outline of the history and development of the Philosophy of Mind in English speaking countries, reduced to its core material and explained in a highly accessible manner. In this sense it is a key introductory textbook on the subject valuable to the prospective university student and the curious novice alike. Extending from the Pre-Scientific idea of the Soul in Greece and Egypt and progressing via early Skepticism and the Cartesian Revolution into Idealist and Materialist accounts of Mind. After digressing into a some early Continental and Indian Philosophy along the way, it ends with our current Scientific attempts to understand the Mind. But then pushes the envelope further, transcending the narrow Materialist paradigm and coming to grips with the... More > irreducible nature and mysteries of Consciousness itself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen J Ash had studied Philosophy on an amateur level since his teens, and after briefly working for the NHS, as a medical lab technician, and in IT, as a software engineer, he finally graduated with an honours degree in Philosophy from The University of London as a mature student in 2001. He went on to continue at both Kings College London and the LSE, where he gained his MSc in The Philosophy and History of Science in 2003, specializing in the Philosophy of Mind and Psychology and the Philosophy of Science (principally via the Philosophy of Biology and of Physics). Since 2006 he has been teaching Philosophy both as a private tutor and a freelance teacher for several further educational establishments, primarily the Workers Education Association. He is also an author of works on speculative history, esoterica, political theory, counter culture and science fiction / fantasy. He lives in London and shares a flat with a philosophical black cat called Rockster.< Less
