This is a book I couldn't put down once I started to read it. You feel you are in the author's very safe hands as he takes you on a rich and complex journey through the labrynthine corridors of Whitehall, the smokey drinking holes of Fleet Street, the ex-pat world in Lisbon, and war-torn France. The suberbly drawn characters are beautifully observed and overall you have the sense that the story, although a work of fiction, is authentic. It's also very, very funny in places. This is a read you should not miss! J

Another seductive total immersion from this master craftsman. There are the trademark blendings of different histories with the added dose of numerous plot and human uncertainties. This gives an extra level of complexity to an interesting and ranging narrative. You will also get an in-depth description of the social and eating habits of civil servants, politicians and journalists in a not too distant past. So much so that you will either yearn for this lost period or reach for the Rennies. This is a novel but also a rare historical document by an insider who is able to shed light on an important but neglected part of this country's life.
