The Two Prophets of Revelation

BySteven Ortlepp

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Revelation 11:3–13, with its reference to two witness-prophets, is a parenthetical section that gives information on the Great Tribulation. At that time God will raise up two prophets for 1260 days, to predict what lies ahead (v. 3). As credentials, they will receive supernatural power to kill their enemies, withhold rain, and turn water to blood (vv. 4–6). They will be announcing some of the plagues to be unleashed on mankind in the very near future (cf. Rev. 15, 16). At the end of 1260 days, the beast from the abyss will wage war with them, overcome them, and kill them (v. 7). Their deaths will cause the whole earth to rejoice, but God will raise them up and they will ascend into heaven (vv. 8–12). Who are the two prophets? What is their purpose? When are they destined to appear? This writer prefers the view that the two prophets are not a group, but two anointed individuals, presently unknown, who will minister in the spirit and power of Moses and Elijah in the future tribulation period.
