This is a swashbuckling tribute to everything British - with tongue thrust somewhere near cheek, but with that Steampunk sensibility that seems to be asking: And what's so b----- great about the present American world empire? In these pages, we are in a different universe. Horses and men hybridized with Silverdale steel and brass. Tiny message trains that emerge from and disappear back into the skirting boards of government offices. Names like Lodestone and Dreadful. And a very different value system to our current hypocrisies. National chauvinism, grateful manservants, heroic levels of boozing, casual brutality and unapologetic Imperial sentiments will not help the digestion of anyone who can't tell real reality from virtual. And you simply do not call a man an alcoholic, just because he drinks beer, wine, brandy and anything else he can lay his hands on from before breakfast until he collapses, raving and amnesiac, last thing at night. Especially not if he's the man who saves the... More > world from the ambitions of the (ahem) French! No, this reality is not for those whose sense of humour has been bleached out by Political Correctness. At the expense of repetition, this is hardcore Steampunk! The attention to physical, visual detail is excellent, developing a richly-realised universe. We see Steampunk's legacy in the airships of Michael Moorcock, in the brass and leather, the industrial pollution and Difference Engines of Bruce Sterling. And the language is a nice mix of archaism and modernity. But it is of course the character of Sebastopol Valiant that drives our interest. A certain aristocratic (in the sense of elite) charm that goes back at least to Flashman, coming up to the present via The Saint, James Bond and Luther Arkwright. These are great forebears, and Harrison does them honour with this latest incarnation of the fearless, lusty, unstoppable British Hero. Pip pip Mr H!< Less
