Steve Ward presents an amazing, in depth analysis of the FUNdamentals of play. In no other publication have I found complex behavioural concepts explained in such human and applicable terms. I recommend this book to all recognised in the book as being the parents/ tutors/therapists/nanny etc. Basically, the sometimes scary jargon of A.B.A is cleverly explained and paired with reinforcement in this most enlightening book. If your goal is to teach your child how to play games and to get the most of his play activities, you might as well go to the expert. In Steve Ward's book, "What You Need to Know about Motivation and Teaching Games: An In-depth Analysis", Steve focuses in on 12 universal and useful games while discussing the "how" and "why" of learning game play. He uses his years of experience as a BCBA to break games into their most logical steps and teach them in a way that mazimizes their value ot your child both as a means of development and fun. "What You Need to Know about Motivation and Teaching Games" is a great book for anyone involved in the lives of children with autism. Ward takes what could be just another technical guide and makes it entertaining with his trademark humor and unique insights. As a behavior therapist, it has been invaluable to my work. Ward helps you figure out how to get kids interested in playing games, and as anyone who works with individuals with developmental disabilities knows, this is essential. I have used this book with every child that I work with. It is easy to teach the games to children at almost every developmental level. The games can be taught in their basic form for early learners and can be made more difficult for advanced learners. This book has helped me to become not just a better game facilitator, but an all around better teacher. Ward really makes you take a look at your teaching techniques and with his direction helps fine tune skills that can be applied to all... More > environments. This is an excellent book for all teachers, therapists, parents, grandparents, for anyone who is involved in bettering the lives of children with autism. None of us could imagine life without the simple joy of playing games with our friends. With this book, Ward helps children with developmental disabilities enjoy this simple pleasure that so many of us take for granted.< Less

"Great book!" Creative and insightful ways to play these games! Terrificly written in a way both behavior analysts and parents/teachers can appreciate. Without Steve's clever approach, we could not have shown our daughter how to enjoy some of these classic games. His humor is also quite funny!

"Teaching 12 Games" I love this book! The games are great and the step by step instructions and example scripts are so easy to follow. I'm regularly playing the games with brilliant results and the Kids are loving them. Its especially helped with ideas for play dates and sibling pairing! The hotter/colder game has been amazing at getting some of the kids I work with to maintain focus. A really worthwhile investment that I would happily recommend to all.
