There are a handful of poets in my "circle" who are not just good, but they know WHY a poem is good and how to shape it that way. No happy accidents, like it is with most of us; for them, it's a question of craft. With "Purgatory Chasm," "Beachcomber," and so many more, this book presents a master class in sound. My favorite, though, is "Bad Spell"; a gift to middle schoolers who need to hear how missed recognition can be considered good luck.

“Steven Withrow’s facility with language amazes and delights with every spiral and turn. Like the conch shell he writes about, these perfectly constructed poems express their meaning through their form. It is difficult to believe this observant and joyful book is a debut effort. Echoing his ‘Wood Thrush,’ Steven Withrow is a ‘singular singer.’” -- Richard Michelson, poet and author .... “Steven Withrow is the new face of children’s poetry in America, but the formalist poems of his Crackles of Speech are nothing of the kind. Rather, they are the compressed bliss of poetry writ large, built of masterful metrics, wonderfully inventive metaphors, and uninhibited diction. Whether the subject is birds, snow, famous paintings, or the tripwires of adolescence, Withrow refuses to let a word go to waste. If you are lucky enough to come across Crackles, congratulate yourself: This is the premiere of a brilliant career in poetry.” -- J. Patrick Lewis, Former U.S. Children’s Poet Laureate
