This book contains an amazing collection of road and bridge records, spanning from Colonial time, into and through early America. These records highlight firsthand issues with a sparsely populated county. The maintenance of the roads, as well as the numerous bridges, was the responsibility of the citizens of the county. Bridges are typically maintained by the bridge contractor, but this county imposed the effort on the local people. This will cause great stress, all well documented in this book, with original letters. This book contains images of each document, along with a transcript of the key material, which is indexed for easy searching. Also two early governors of the State have documents pertaining to this topic, as residents of New Bern.
