Granville County, N.C. - Miscellaneous Land Records - Vol 1 (1752-1910)

ByStewart Dunaway

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Granville County was formed in 1746, from Edgecombe County (formed in 1741 from Bertie). Granville was reduced in size, when Orange County gets part of the western side in 1752. Bute County was formed in 1764, from Granville County and then abolished in 1779, when Franklin County was created. The last division occurred in 1881, when Vance County was created from parts of Granville, Warren and Franklin counties. Not every county collection (in the NC State Archives) has a “Miscellaneous Land Record” collection. However, based on my experience in Orange Co., these records are invaluable (if they exist). Granville, like Orange, has two boxes of miscellaneous land records. Typically, these collections have plats, maps, or other drawings that can assist land researchers, as they pour over grants, deeds, and other sources. The saying – a picture is worth a thousand words – holds its weight with land research. This volume contains State Land Grant disputes (Entry Disputes) and their associated jury resolution.
