This volume of Stuart Blazer’s poetry is overdue. It coincides with the department’s recognition that we should pause and question what we do and how we do it. Not only should we ask what architecture is (as Stuart provoked at our first meeting) but also how do we foster empowered learning? As we find ourselves in a fast current of shifting tides we must be cognizant that what we teach needs to acknowledge, adapt and adjust to the world we are in and the one the students are entering. Perhaps we can take our knowledge, skills and ways of knowing and address questions that are traditionally outside of our discipline. Perhaps we need to include other ways and lessons that we don’t know or have. What we do have at core is that we are a school of makers. Stuart’s making with words is an equivalent to the making with material that is core to RISD, staples that we would like to take with us on this voyage into renewed form.
