“Esperanza Rising” by Pam Munoz Ryan was first published in 2000. It is a young adult novel. The story of the novel is set in post-Revolutionary Mexico and in California when America was facing the Great Depression. There were about eighty eight percent white Americans in California in the 1920s and 1930s. It was about the time story takes place. There were around 36,800 Mexican field workers in that area. Most of the white people, about 88%, were the owners of the lands. The book is the winner of several prestigious literary awards, including Pura Belpre Award.
