Addiction and dysfunction caused by it to the family is the major theme of the play. Most of the characters in the play present highly troubling sides of their personalities: they conceal, resent, regret, blame, accuse, and deny. However, there are certain attempts at affection, but the conflicts are constantly present like an escalating cycle. The conflicts are followed by encouragement and eventual consolation. It is a highly autobiographical play. Like the major character, Edmund, in the play, the author, O’Neill, was also the child of a Broadway actor. His parents were Irish-Americans like the Tyrones.
