The book was translated into English language by John E. Wood. The novel was the winner of the PEN Translation Prize in the year 1987. The story revolves around a perfume apprentice, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, in the 18th century France. Grenouille begins to stalk and kill virgins in search of the perfect scent. Eventually, he finds that perfect scent in a young woman named Laure. With his acute sense of smell, Grenouille finds Laure in a secluded private garden in Grasse. Since the novel has extreme inter-textuality, the books has often been both criticized and admired. It has been greatly admired by educated readers. However, the readers may interpret the degree of satire according to their own mental ingenuity.
