There are various characters in the play, but the character of Trigorin is considered to be Chekhov’s greatest male role. However, the play relies upon several characters who develop as the play progresses. In the 19th century theatre the melodrama and lurid actions were very popular in the plays; “The Seagull” does not show the actions like Konstantin’s suicide attempts onstage. The characters do not speak directly about the issues; they tend to speak in ways that skirt around issues.
