In a Village Over the Hill, a Dog
Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Considered to be modern Korea's most accomplished creator of fiction, Hwang Sun-won is equally well versed in poetry, short stories and novels. He has authored some of the best known stories of Korea to date like Stars, 1940, The Old Potter, 1944, and A Sudden Shower, 1959, also included in this present collection.
Hwang was born in 1915 near Pyongyang, five years into the official annexation of Korea by Japan. He graduated from Waseda University in Japan majoring in English Literature. His early works like In a Village Over the Hill, a Dog, name piece of a story collection published in 1946 but pre Liberation in content, already evince the lyrical humanism prevalent in all his works since.
Since the Korean War, he has spent the rest of his whole life in or around Seoul, witness to myriad political, social and economic upheavals. But his literature only obliquely reflects these changes, as it depicts the individual’s response to society, than the society itself.
