The students will read Tale of Genji, Death in Midsummer, Woman Warrior, Rickshaw Boy, Death in Midsummer, Joy Luck Club, Truth Tales: Contemporary Stories from Women Writers of India, No-no Boy, Catfish and Mandala, and Traditional Japanese Poetry: An Anthology, as well as a selection of short stories and poetry. Indian writers such as Tagore, Ghalib and Kalidasa, contemporary and classic Chinese writers such as Hsuch-ch’in and She, and Japanese authors such as Shikibu, Basho, Shimei and Mishima will also be read and discussed. Weekly lectures will provide historical and cultural information, and will compare Asian literature to its American and European counterparts. Students will also watch classic movies such as “The Joy Luck Club” and “Beyond Barbed Wire,” which will supplement their reading list as well as broaden their exposure to and understanding of Asian history and culture.
