Peg James, a young black woman from Ohio, moves to Birmingham, "the most segregated city in the United States" when her employer, Dr. Robert Carson and his wife move there in hopes of him reconnecting with his brother who lives next door and has no clue that they're related. Before very long Peg finds hersef attracted to a handsome young former member of the Klan, who is confused by his attraction to this beautiful Negro woman with a secret so dangerous it could cost the lives of Peg and her "family" if revealed.
