"You must LEAP from the furrow." If you find your self looking at the work in this catalogue and feeling the urge to paint, draw, sculpt, build a house, sew a quilt or dig a pool in your backyard then Sylvain Chamberlain has achieved a major personal goal. Mr. Chamberlain is a very thoughtful individual. Yet, he defines himself - discovers himself as all artists do - through what he can create. "You must risk all, leave the known," And there are few things that he can't create when he gets the urge. He is an accomplished in many areas including carpentry and architecture, writing and filmmaking, musical and visual arts. Mr. Chamberlain recognizes that by developing skills that require the use of both hand and mind, one can have an ongoing tangible relationship with the world. He also perceives that change, distortion and decay are constant. And since we all have to deal with our lives progressing whether we like it or not, we must: "...fight the attraction of... More > comfort zones,..." The body of work in this exhibition "LEAP!" consists of acrylic painting on canvas. There are people spinning, twisting, rising, falling, suspended. Orange, grey, black and white marks lunge and float back and forth. The contours of the toes and fingers and hair are drawn impulsively representing the distortion in movement. Many backgrounds present a loose grid. Some edges are strong, while some disappear. Is it the tile floor around a pool? Is it the tic-tac-toe board? (At what age did you realize that you would probably never win another game of tic-tac-toe with another clear-headed adult opponent? This "cute" game becomes futile. Tic, tac, toe. Tic, tac, toe. Tic, tac, toe. 10 more times? 20 more times? 50 more times? Is this life? Is this your life? Day after day. Year after year. Tic, tac, toe. Tic, tac, toe.) "...create new myths, and recreate your 'Self'" As you look at this body of work listen to your thoughts: "I like that area." "Not sure about that....hmm." "Oooh, that's weird!" "Yeah, that's interesting". Allow yourself to think what you will and consider what you see and how it feels. Look through it again and play in the negative spaces. These paintings have quite a lot of room to bounce around in. Grab hold of the drips and smudges and climb around. Leave out the Xs and Os. Put in Ys and Js and 6s; your own shapes. Remember the leapings of your life. How are you going to leap next? If your looking at the work in this catalogue and feeling the urge to dance, sing, act, write a poem or play, then you're on your way. Sylvain Chamberlain is calling you to this.
