I was given a copy of this as a gift from a family member who really enjoyed it. What a unique collection, spanning half a century and encompassing a life. Indeed, that's what this is-- the story of an American life in poetry. Some poems are fun, some are romantic, some dark and brooding, and some deep and searching. I have a lot of pages folded down to read again. My favorite is "From Day to Day the Wonder of you Grows," on the amazement she felt early on with her first child (1945). She writes about his bright spark, and then moves to her fear: "...one small light dims soon if a whole world's dark/ The world must progress as you grow, my son/ Your air, light, freedom and the world's are one." I recommend this to fans of independent, non-pretentious poetry.
