This book explains why some children (and adults) have difficulty reading and spelling words correctly. The problem is lack of phonological awareness, which is the ability to match the sounds you speak to the letters you see for reading, and the letters you print for spelling. Learning how to feel sounds, noticing how they look in a mirror, and linking this to how they sound, when used together help children (and adults) read and spell accurately. And if they make mistakes, to correct them independently. This manual teaches the parts of linguistics that help with accurate reading and spelling. There are forty-eight lessons which teach how words are constructed, why they sound the way they do, how to learn the hard parts, and why certain parts are hard. When students learn more about how English works, their confidence and school grades soar. This is also a resource book for teachers because it explains the SYSTEM of English letters and sounds.
Phonemic awareness terribly neglected in our classrooms. We need a process that allows teachers to assist children in attending to the sounds of language in a way that whole language and "balanced" programs do not and so puts many learners at risk. This book is an outstanding resource for the classroom and gives our most vulnerable learners a method of learning sounds in a systematic way that allows them to build sound/symbol awareness. Ms. Sinclaire has built a program that is outstanding!
"Just what we've been looking for !" Our elementary school has been looking for a program to teach word study and Sylvia Sinclaire's book ... is it! She covers all the items in our Language Arts scope and sequence BUT with the important focus on phonemic awareness skills. Most programs focus on print, but this one focuses on the SOUNDS in our language. This is the way to reach those 15 to 25% of students who don't learn to read and spell with regular instruction. Sylvia's book is easy to read and is well organized into spelling/sound choices. I LOVE the words lists and the quotes from past students. Difficult English "rules" are explained with ease and made much easier to understand. This book is a must for ALL elementary teachers, principals and PARENTS !
