"A Sight For Sore Eyes... 4 of 5 Stars" At first glance, TKD appears to romantic fantasy filled with cheesy cliches. But if you stick with it, you'll find that this is a cold glass of ice water after a long walk in the hot barren desert of fantasy books. TKD contains standard cast consisting of a beautiful princess, her flaky king father, the commoner who can't have her, sneaky elves in paradise and trolls living in the frozen north. Winfrey mixes global politics, historical allegory, humor, and characters who are a combination of good and evil, with formulaic fantasy for a Disney flavored story with an unexpected bite. Alexandra has a lot of typical Mary Sue traits, but she doesn't necessarily save the day, some of her biggest efforts backfire, and past hardships typical of Mary Sue characters cause her to make major mistakes. David is the wet-blanket commoner in love with a princess he can't have, often fighting to overcome his personal flaws and losing. The elf prince... More > Ryland is a nasty one, jockeying for his older brother's throne and chasing Alexandra, all in the hopes of someday having the power to exterminate the trolls, or kapras as Winfrey has named them. But he's not really evil-- he's motivated, and the trolls themselves are neither bad nor good. The writing flows well, and is impressive for a first-time author. It's well-formatted and easy to follow. The wonderful story flow along with the classy cover art will make this one you will want to keep on your bookshelf. If you're tired of Tolkien drudgery, but also tired of Disney fairy tales with formulaic happy endings, The King's Daughter might just be for you. The teen rating is appropriate for the language and situations, and sex, language and violence are never gratuitous or graphic. This book just falls short of five stars for a good start, leaving off one for some fluff that really could have been edited out, and I could have used a little more bloody action... But I'll be there for Masquerade.< Less
