Out of the Fire and Ashes

ByTammi Brownlee

I was just three years old when my mother and brother died in a tragic fire in South Boston. Forced to live with my alcoholic father I would live through years of emotional, physical and sexual abuse, being tossed around from home to home, until I was old enough to fight back and find refuge in various foster homes. As I got older I would discover the lies told to me and a buried secret about my mother, she had two children that she had abandoned in Boston, who were later adopted. My search for them would take years until I met Stanley Forman, a Pulitzer prize winning photographer, who had taken photos the night of the fire that had killed my family, and with the help of Sheila Frankel of the Department of Children and Family Services I was able to locate both my brother and my sister. Our reunions, both emotional and joyous, completed my life and were captured on film for the Channel 5 news.
