Mar 27, 2009"Daimond Dilemma" "Must read" is a phrase that is often overused in book reviews. But this is one case where it is justified. Having lived and worked in Korea for five years, this is the one book I wish I had read when I first arrived in Seoul. I could have quickly understood the very unique Korean cultural, social, political and economic environment. My job would have been easier and my life more enjoyable just by undertanding what was really going on around me and understanding the historical context. Tariq has a wonderful insight into the Korean way of thinking, living and doing business. His framework for achieving "diamond" status is aggressive. But Korea is one of the few countries in the world that has achieved miracles in the past and can do so again. Message to corporate leaders: Buy this book and give it to every member of your senior staff doing business in Korea.
Jul 20, 2008"A very unique perspective" I've always been curious to know more about this interesting country, particularly from a business perspective, and Tariq's done a great job of telling this story. The book is very balanced: not too dense or 'dumbed-down' on the business fundamentals, and not too critical or overly positive in the analysis. I enjoyed this book; it would be great if this were part of a series on each of Asia's successful economies.
Feb 2, 2007"Wonderful! " I lived in Asia for more than 7 years--and 3 of those in South Korea. I'm truly impressed with the way in which Diamond Dilemma captures the essence of Korea's paradox: a country held hostage by its recent success but riddled with serious challenges to move forward. As an Asian-American, I'm grateful to find a Westerner who appreciates Asian's values and virtues--while respectfully and constructively addressing key shortcomings. As an educated and well-traveled Westerner, I'm a refreshed to find a serious and well-documented chronicle of an Asian country that does not default into the usual country-bashing simply because they do not fully embrace an American approach to their society, culture and economy. A truly enjoyable and insightful read. I'm already looking forward to Mr. Hussain's next piece of work!!!
