So what is Smiler? Evidently it’s a book of some description, but it is also a state of mind & by reading this twisted, comedic tale, following Swill, Johnny & the rest of the gang on their haphazard journey to uncover Smiler’s message, it's a state of mind that is easily attainable. Likened to a profound mix between ‘Trainspotting’ & ‘Jonathan Livingstone Seagull’, Smiler is an offbeat, stylistically striking novel that cleverly uses photography to blur the lines between fact & fiction. It is a retarded project based upon a retarded concept, that states that if every action has an opposite reaction, then by writing a book with no apparent purpose, the end result would in fact have true meaning, & that much like the ‘Big Bang’ theory that created the universe & everything in it, you can get something remarkable from absolutely nothing. Let Smiler leave you feeling educated, enlightened & ultimately... More > entertained because remember…only Smiler has the answer.< Less

Oct 15, 2009"Review by Pencil of Smiler excerpt posted on Urbis" This story thus far is full of brilliant lines and musings from the narrator, so unbeliveable that they have created a virtual pallete full of interesting characters in a short time. The pace set by the writing is perfect, and the story can be read quickly. It flows nicely, even though it seems almost stream of concious. The narrator himself reminds me of a fictional young, drunken cousin of Douglas Adams who time warped into modern life to spread the seeds of his cynicism via the written word, not because he wanted too, but because its merely something to do. Its very funny, in terms of true comedy. The strength of this work is in its characters…and not only their attributes, but in the way that the narrator perceives them. The narrator himself is as unreliable as Gregdude’s inventions, but that doesnt undermine his message. Of all things to be focued on in a bar, his priorities seem to be his beer, the virginity of the... More > ashtray, and his health. The narrators friends are the best part, and are what will “make” the story great. Im honestly curious about what you will write next about them. The characterization details of their actions and motives for existing are completely bizarre, but believable enough for this to be one of the best pieces of original fiction Ive come across. Some of my favorite lines are: 'We have a new direction that still manages to be so vague as to feel like an adventure into the unknown. Some might call it an exciting new twist.' and 'it’s dirty and sullied much like the group of friends that are currently orbiting it' These are great examples of characterization of the narrator via dialog. Anyway, great story, very original, and I look forward to more. Hopefully you have the ambition to finish this novel.< Less
