For an advanced Synth DIY hobbyist, this book is probably not substantial enough to justify the purchase. It is a very short book and only shows very rudimentary circuits for realizing functions like VCO, VCF, VCA. For the Synth beginner, this is probably not a good book either! Most of the circuits use obsolete parts that are hard to find. Sourcing 3080's today is a hassle. 566's are expensive when you can find them. All in all, the beginning would probably do better just searching the web for drum circuits. There is probably better circuits on websites today than the information in this book. Also consider checking out Henry's circuits that he posts on He has designed some really killer circuits. This book is just not his best work. The book provides some neat little circuits. It will show you how to build a simple lo-fi (and inexpensive) drum synth. Most of the circuits are not original. Henry has borrowed many circuits from other sources (as he very readily... I am glad I already understand all of the things in his book, or else I would probably have felt left-behind. I felt that he does not explain how the fundamental blocks of the circuit really work. He didn't explain how the 556 works, he didn't explain (to my satisfaction) how the diodes in his Voltage-Controlled Filter work. The most important aspect of his circuits are usually glossed over. The writing is alright. There are several grammatical/spelling errors.< Less
