This is a story of how one man wound up building a tourist resort with pandanus thatched cottages on Emidj Island, Jaluit Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands. Emidj was a piece of paradise. The weather was great, fresh fish were abundant, there was beautiful coral to dive and oggle, all far away from cars and modernity. But, alas, modernity is pervasive and intrudes into any and all places and much of the bad things of modern life get to previously unspoiled places. There was discontent among some young men. They got drunk, stole kerosene, doused the Iroj's cottage in a dry typhoon and the wind carried the flames and two cottages were burned down and the project was terminated. That was for the best because even then sea levels were rising. Now the frequent tropical rains, the only source of drinking water, are gone. But, memories of the melodic singing of the natives lingers on. Friends were made and were left behind but fond memories linger on.
