This book provides the history of the Jaskinia family from 1671 to 1907, with special focus on Jan Jaskinia. Jan had the strength of character to uproot his life in mid-19th Century Poland, leave what was familiar and comfortable, and come to America, a country foreign to him. He tried city life in Chicago, the Wild West in Texas in the 1870s, homesteading in Arkansas and Missouri, and finally carpentry in the city again, that time in Kansas City, Kansas. Along the way, he married three times, fathered 17 children, acquired three step-children and one adopted daughter, and lost two wives and several children tragically. Before dying in 1907, he had prospered enough to become a land owner. While the Jaskinia family has died out in Poland, Jan is responsible for all of its family members in America, whether they spell their names Jaskinia, Jaskina, Eiskina, Eskina, or Yaskina. All of this is a remarkable achievement for a man born a landless peasant.

This book is about my great-great-great grandfather, and I had an absolute blast reading this book! For a book filled with facts it sure fired my imagination up, I was really able to get a great mental picture of what life would have been for Jan and his family, and it's insane to put yourself in his shoes. This book specifically has me looking into planning a vacation to Gdansk so I can snoop around the areas my cave dwelling family got their start.
