Dec 2, 2009I LOVED THIS BOOK. Also, the sequel "Shatter". I won't give a synopsis of the story as many others have done that already but will say this is the best apocalyptic book I have ever read. I am anxiously awaiting Mr. Sherry's next book after Shatter. I got an email when I purchased this book and Shatter that another was being written but that was a pretty long time ago and I have searched and searched but haven't found the third in this series of books. If you like post apocalyptic books, you will really enjoy this one. I could not stop reading it, even to sleep. Enjoy!
Oct 7, 2009"Great book" He has 2 out and both are real page turners. Highly recommend.
Aug 4, 2009"Deep Winter a realistic look at a catastrophic situation" I have read a lot of "survivalist fiction", but this is one of the best of the genre, simply because it is so realistic. The people are real people, they could be my neighbors, with ordinary strengths and weaknesses. As the catastrophe unfolds, people adapt, step by step. They meet problems and solve them. The writing keeps the story moving and the reader guessing, "What will happen next?" Readers can also learn a lot about possible practical responses to the situations likely to arise in a major, long-lasting catastrophe. Actually, I should say "catastrophes", because while the book begins with a natural catastrophe (earthquake and volcanic eruption in the US Northwest, this is the trigger for a series of cascading problems that worsen the disaster for all concerned.
Sep 18, 2008"Deep Winter" This is a real page burner! Be ready to lose a LOT of sleep while reading his work. Great movie material too, IMO. More soon, please!
Jan 6, 2008"One of the best I've read." I have read a lot of "survival fiction" over the years. I have found this book to be one one the best. As a matter of fact it is in my top three favorites in the survival fiction genre. The plot is very well written and thought out. It all starts with a natural disaster. Then various social, economic, and political factors all shake up the mix. Many little things over the country begining adding to the problems of disaster recovery, until it just all seems too much. This is the story of how one family copes with these problems and overcomes the situation. The characters all are very well developed, and are just average people thrust into extraordinary circumstances. This book not only shows how it affects one family, but also the bigger picture. The story follows an average man as the head of an anerage family. It could be anyone of us. There are a lot of solutions executed by the extended family working together with the help of a... More > few good friends. Many topics are covered in this book, everything from natural disasters to war to the breakdown of society to an economic implosion. All topics that are a very real part of todays world. This scenario is indeed very plausible. Which is what makes it such a good story. There are tips to survival spread throughout and are interwoven into the plot, which makes for even better reading. This is a great book to read if you are into preparing for the worst, thinking about preparing for unforseen circumstances that may arise, or to give to someone who may need to start planning for the worst, without overwhelming them with all the doom and gloom that is possible in todays society, especially in light of recent events. All in all, I very highly recommend this book. It's a book you can't put down until you are finished.< Less
