"Shatter" I recently completed Mr. Sherry's sequel to Deep Winter, Shatter. The character development begun in the first book has carried over nicely into the second. The Drummond and the extended family story is interesting, fun to read and has enough detail to be informative and yet not so detailed to overshadow the essential tale. While a great majority of apopolyctic fiction buries the reader in catastrophe after catastrophe with no basis or reasoning behind what happens, Mr. Sherry has brought a nice balance to the genre with a story that is both easy to read and intelligently portrayed. There are some stories that have not yet been told, and I look forward to future additions.

"Shatter" I have read both of Mr. Sherry's books about the Drummond family and their travails and find them (in particular "Shatter") to be a very fine read. In view of what we are seeing in today's world (ie possible Third World famine, economic breakdown at home, increases in earthquakes, vulcanism etc.) it makes excellent sense to take the author's warnings to heart. A sudden tragedy, (in this case the eruption of Mt. Ranier near Seattle), shines a very bright spotlight on the need to have preparations and a set of survival skills to hand. This is not a "roll-your-eyes-survival-story", rather it asks, by implication if you are ready if "something does happen". Do you know your local community and more importantly your neighbours? Do you have at least something to tide you and your family over until you can try to put a longer term survival strategy into place? If not, will you become a scavenger who takes, by force, whatever he wants and... More > damn the consequences? Will you therefore wind up being target practice for the local military? Will you be a contributor or a parasite after a cataclysm in other words. I might quibble with Mr. Sherry's explanation of what is happening globally in some areas, but the guts of the book - survival and taking care of one's loved ones are absolutely accurate in my view. I would rate this book as an eight stars out of ten, and personally I am looking forward to seeing the next installment of the series. Gerry High Level, Canada< Less
