A fresh take on hell and damnation. Angelus: The War of the Will is a fascinating edition to any role-playing library. Players take on the roles of angels, existing in a complicated society between hell and earth (notice I didn’t mention heaven). Cut off from eternal paradise, angels now survive in an ever raging battle between (the perceptions of) good and evil, with humanity caught in the middle. This book contains the basic system for running a game in what are called the “Planes of Divinity.” Pros: The author does an excellent job of conveying the moodiness of the setting. This book could easily plug into a World of Darkness campaign to great effect as it draws upon the emotional aspects of the story and inner struggle of the characters, rather than simple adventure paradigms. The inner workings of the various factions of angels is very evocative. Especially helpful are the details regarding their motivations and relationships to the other choirs. One could easily come up with... More > plotlines involving political intrigue for a campaign. A leveling system that actually makes sense. “Hey, I just killed my 31st kobold and all of a sudden I’ve gained the ability to take more damage, cast fireball, and have become skilled in a weapon I’ve never even owned!” In Angelus, you constantly grow in abilities, with special powers only taught by a mentor within your chosen choir. Cons: As with most self-published books, especially first editions, there are errors here and there. However, in comparison with some other small press books, the text is very clean and professional. No index. Granted, the layout is easy to traverse, but an index still would have been welcome. Actual printing is substandard. There are places where a background gradient nearly obscures the underlying text. Also, the pictures, while quite evocative, are of poor print quality. I don’t know if the problem is with the printer (I did not purchase the PDF edition), or with the actual source images being low resolution. Conclusion. As a first effort, Angelus: The War of the Will is quite impressive, and I would eagerly purchase additional supplements when they became available—the great content more than makes up for any cosmetic shortcomings. I look forward to the end of days and tip my halo to Mr. Young.< Less
