When I reviewed my essays, on subjects ranging from cell mitosis to foxes, trees to geometry; Texas to the meaning of kindergarten; I found that a poem often lives at their heart, or that saves the day by “bringing the runner home.” Here is a collection of examples. The commonality isn’t the subject matter, it’s the composition and thought process; it’s the sense that finding the right word is always the crucial aspiration, and for me a poem usually does so. It’s welcoming the fox into the interior of the dialogue between the inner and outer world.
