My daughter was in the Air Force Reserve with Tom, when he was stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC. I had met Tom on several occasions through my daughter, and she had told me of his wit. I never knew exactly how much wit Tom has until I read his book. I am so impressed with his writing. I wish so many more people would have the chance to read this book and appreciate his talents and experiences. Here at Seymour, so many troops would benefit from reading about his bout with depression. It seems to be a major problem here, with serious consequences. Good job Tom. I am proud to say that I know you.

By Laura Wiley Smith: So well done! I have the pleasure of saying the author is my friend. After reading this HUGE little book, I feel honored to know him. It helps us "civies" to understand the need to have outlets for those who fight so hard to keep us free. It will help to drive home that fact that even if you don't personally know a soldier, they are personally willing to give their life for you to live how you please. Remember that, remember them! Take time to put together a package or letter or ANYTHING, send it to them. It has been a while since Tom has been there, but I know he knows some still there and prays for them every day! At first read, you'll think they are crazy!!! Flamingos and all, let me assure you they are the kind of sane we can all wish to be!!! Blessings to Tom for having the courage to put it all out there and in turn be a blessing to those of us still hanging on by our fingernails!!!!

I bought this book to help a friend support a cause he was passionate about. Really not knowing what to expect, but was wonderfully surprised and moved by the book. This book is funny but also offers insight on what our military experience. This book is worth every penny & then some. It would be a great gift for our military families. Thanks Tom for speaking out and trying to help get Mental Illness not such a taboo word. If this books helps just one person, it has definitely done it's job

Reading Tom's book, "Funny Things Happen in a War Zone", made me laugh, smile, cry and just say hmmm. I'm the daughter of a Marine, wife of a Marine, mother of a female sailor and a female soldier, so the military way of life is not new to me. However, seeing our military can still find humor while in a war zone is new to me & was very cool. My husband said during his six deployments to war he has only seen the inside of a Military Exchange Store five times, however, he did find some really strange things in them, just like Tom talks about. Reading this book together made us chuckle and reminded my husband to share some funny stories of his deployments. During his deployments and the deployments of our children my thoughts were always on just having another conversation and knowing they were safe. I always sent fun gifts to them and hoped they found time to rest themselves and their minds. Mahalo for sharing your experiences with us Tom and for being so honest. I've... Having never had a personal interest in military life, I have always prayed for our soldiers and am so proud of them for making the sacrifices they make for our freedom. That being said, this story was truly warm, funny and sad all at the same time. I've wondered how the troops get by day to day. The Flamingo troops were a great addition to Iraq. This was also a very inspirational story. I'm very glad to know you Tom Gilmore!!
