The Quelled Conscience of Conservative Evangelicals in the Age of Inverted Totalitarianism

ByTommy Terry

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
This short essay addresses the failed attempt in secular politics over the past 3 decades by conservative Evangelicals - those who read the Bible literally - to change the American culture. The author reviews that failed political attempt, looks at the New Testament view of the conscience as the God-given interlocutor in guiding the disciple to discern and live faithfully by the standard of Biblical truth, and asks the Christ-follower to see clearly the present political reality of an "inverted totalitarianism" - a term to describe the present tyrannical "managed democracy" coined by political scientist Sheldon Wolin - and to respond to the urgent need to coalesce with other Biblicist Christians to provide a public witness to Christ's superior lordship by persistently and meaningfully speaking out with a biblical mandate to the growing menace, and demanding accountability by the U.S. oligarchical political, corporate, intelligence, and military power relations.
