What do you think?
Paperback, 572 Pages

This is a collection of 135 short, 3 - 7 minute plays and sketches that have been used in churches and in Christian Study Groups. They are designed to raise issues and present alternative views alongside what might be regarded as the mainstream Christian ideology. The intention is to precipitate discussion, to make people think through their faith and so to make spiritual progress. Experience has proved that this is a very effective strategy for doing this.

Sep 10, 2010Tony Raine has written a number of books in which he challenges many of the accepted doctrines and beliefs of mainstream Christianity. Reading them, nobody could deny that he has a sound belief in the fundamentals of our faith, yet he constantly leads us to re-examine aspects that were formulated by our church long after the ministry of Christ. It is his belief that tradition binds us, that holding to a literal interpretation of the Bible is to misunderstand parable and allegory, and that not all doctrines formulated by Christians are valid today. If you find these ideas stimulating and challenging and would like to raise them with other Christians, then his latest book "What do you think?" provides a really novel and very effective method for doing this. He has collected together 135 tried and tested drama sketches that were each written to explore one of the topics. Most contain humour and each one packs a solid punch. Though arguments are generally balanced, one can... More > obviously discern the thinking of the author in the conclusions. You may not always agree with it (nobody will agree with him on everything) but of course you have the last word and if you are left wanting to argue a point then the purpose of the sketch has been achieved. The sketches have been used in Bible-study groups, in a church setting as part of the normal service, or grouped together into a performance of nine or more with songs or hymns between to create a drama evening. Drama is exceptionally effective at holding the concentration of an audience, particularly if learnt rather than read by the actors - a task made easy by the brevity of each sketch and the logical flow of the dialogue. While there are many sources of drama on the market, there is something unique about the way these have been written to challenge the listener. They have been indexed by theme and by Bible references and each is followed by a series of questions if needed to stimulate discussion. By buying the book, you buy the right to use the sketches in church or home without further payment of royalties and may even photocopy sketches for the cast if you destroy the copies afterwards. Priced at £15-95 and available on line, this 572 A5 page book is a truly impressive resource for any Christian leader who wants to help her or his audience towards spiritual progress. You can even see the first ten sketches on the web site to help you to decide if it’s right for you. You can also download the whole book onto your computer for just £2.50. Every effort is made to facilitate the use of this book in order that it will reach the widest possible audience. If you know anyone interested in Christian drama, I suggest this might be an ideal Christmas present. REVD DAVID YOUNGS< Less
