At the time of his death, besides being full-time chaplain at Sweet Briar Colege, Mike was the editor of ARIL’s journal, Religion and Intellectual Life. In fact, he was everything else in ARIL as well [executive director, program planner, fund-raiser, PR man, and certainly the animating spirit. (He is still the last.) In the Church Society, NICM, and ARIL, Mike was pursuing the same goal, fired by the same vision. Central to that vision were the realities of ‘community’ and ‘learning’: communities that were ‘theologically informed, spiritually disciplined, and morally engaged’ and learning that was capacious, collegial, and enlivened by biblical faith — over against the ‘rationalistic, positivistic, individualistic, predatory’ (his words) epistemologies — ideologies — that held the academy in thrall.
