Letters to a Teacher, which describes events that took place in the late 1940s, during the last years of the French Indochina war and the first years of the implementation of Communist policies in northern Vietnam, is a historical testament to the culture and customs of this Vietnamese family who endeavored to lead a full creative life with integrity and according to their ideals, in harsh circumstances of the direst difficulty. This book is a real treasure, and there is so much to learn and admire. What touches one is the sheer authenticity of these lives; the tender sharing in the community; the endless effort made without complaint; the inventiveness in a life where so many things that we take for granted, like ink and nibs, were simply not available; the intensity of the commitment to life and the great creativity in dealing with the extra large troubles of those times. This book leaves one changed; after reading it one can no longer complain about mundane problems, or the efforts... More > it takes to resolve them. Thank you Lang-Hoàn Pham for translating your mother’s letters; thank you for the gift of this book. Rozalia-Maria Tellenbach, Geneva, Switzerland< Less
