Mr. Topaz is Left in Charge

ByTracey Jude, MT-BC

A PORTION OF THE PROCEEDS FROM THE SALE OF THIS BOOK SUPPORT THE SGM JEFFREY A. MCLOCHLIN MEMORIAL FUND. Mr. Topaz lives with Sarge. When Sarge leaves, he says, “You’re in charge.” Mr. Topaz soon discovers that “left in charge” means “left behind”. Trying to manage jealousy, sadness, loneliness and boredom, he treks to the garden to play. Here, he discovers a broken gourd that he must fix. When Sarge returns, Mr. Topaz learns that his action fulfilled a surprisingly greater purpose. Beginning with children in preK – grade 3, this lesson of discovering a greater self-purpose can be recalled in the late elementary and middle school years. This story is dedicated to the honor and memory of Sergeant Major Jeffrey A. McLochlin (1961 – 2006), who clearly knew his purpose in life and bravely answered the call to serve. Learn more about this connection in the preview, and find out more about SGM McLochlin at Memory-Of.com.
