London 1939 and the city’s children must be evacuated to the countryside to keep them safe from the German bombs. After a tearful goodbye at the station, Peggy Larkin is sent to live with strangers in the country, unsure if she’ll ever see her parents again.
Peggy meets the ultra strict Mrs Henderson and does her best to fit into country life. But what secret lies behind the locked door in the big house? Who is the man hiding out in the woods? Peggy finds a friend in Alfie, another London evacuee and together they try to solve the mystery.

This book is a wonderful read. I have bought all of Trevor Belshaw's books for children. Peggy Larkin's War is the first one I read and it is a book I will definitely read again. Highly recommended.
I have been waiting for Peggy Larkin's War to come out in paperback, so that I could buy copies for my grandchildren. Peggy's story is not only a cracking good story, but an insight into what it was like during the war, for children who were evacuated to the country. History is much more fun in a proper story. Peggy doesn't want to leave her mother, but once she is on that train it's not long before her adventures begin - with the biggest - and the best one - waiting for her where she eventually gets taken in. Not only an excellent read for children, but also for the young at heart of every age. I hope there will be a sequel.
