As an active Panendeist I've read a lot of the host of writing out there, but this book is by far the best example of intelligent, objective writing about Deism and it's place in the pantheon of modern belief systems. The author clearly deals with the two most common generally accepted principles of Deism: 1. the belief in a God, Creator, Higher Being, Divine Being...whatever you chose to call it; and 2. Deism rejects outright and absolutely the dogmatic principles of all revealed religions. What puts this book head and shoulders above many other modern works is the time and depth Gowdy takes examining the 12 largest revealed religions on this Earth. He is objective, clear, and balanced in his description of the roots, sacred books, prophets, and the philosophy of each religion. Moving into the modern era (the Age of Enlightenment), Gowdy takes the reader back in time to the founding of America, using solid references to clarify the role Deism played in the founding of America. (I... More > won't spoil it for you). There is more, but I have to get back to work. If any book in this century has a strong role in bringing confused Theists and confused Atheists into a more comfortable belief system, which I believe Deism represents, this book will do it.< Less
