Mrs. Mandell's ghost is a memory that haunts the life of an eclectic, middle-aged woman. The heroine uses unconventional strategies as she struggles with failing health, poverty and isolation. Throughout the book she navigates cults and cons, who are always on the look out for the vulnerable. In the end she makes peace with the spectre through yet another unusual friendship, but the ghost is always among us.
The Ghost of Mrs. Mandell was inspired by the bitter-sweet childhood memory about a woman abandoned in her old age. Montgomery has changed enough about the story to protect the innocent, mainly female friends he portrays. However, the problems faced by people in the West as they age are still so similar that this story seems timeless.
