Herman & Margaret (or, Margaret and Her Man…) is a linear narrative, a story of two people who meet in Sin City, more-than-contemplating suicide. Herman lost his leg in a war. Margaret is obese. Both are confined to wheelchairs. This is perhaps the greatest strength of this story, its representation of differently-bodied individuals. The author invites us to read their story with empathy, not with pity, depicting them as wily and agentic rather than helpless in their disabilities. The characterization is strong; through dialogue and inner monologues, we are able to form a precise picture of these two individuals. However, what took away from this narrative, for me, was precisely the amount of narration. I felt a little like Herman, pushing himself painstakingly forward through the desert on a wheelchair. I felt impatient with the story, I kept wondering, “why read this story rather than any other story?”. The story would benefit greatly from brevity – brevity would allow the... In its current state, there are long dry patches of mundane narration and less-than-stellar language, which ultimately dilute the instances of beautiful prose. There are wonderful moments in this story – the grapefruit is a constant surprise, a touch of incongruity in an otherwise conventional narrative, there are moments when the language soars (my favorite is towards the very end, part of a different kind of soaring). I wish the story were shorter so that these moments of surprise could register more powerfully. In the end, perhaps a good way to understand Herman & Margaret is as an experiment in linearity by a non-linear mind. A grapefruit rolling in the desert.< Less
