Il libro è la storia del comandante della guardia di un castello che salva dalla morte la sua donna accusata di stregoneria e quindi fugge con lei. Gli eventi prendono in seguito una strana piega, ma la vicenda pur presentandosi avventurosa, non assume mai i toni di un rocambolesco eroismo.
