This is a unique and valuable book. It presents numerical analysis as a field of scientific computing rather than an elaboration of various uses of orthogonal polynomials or matrix canonical form. Implementation is given equal weight to theory and architecture dependent issues are not ignored. It is also beautifully written. Highly recommended for those who use the methods and want to connect to the theory and those with a background in theoretical numerical analysis who want to learn more about algorithmic and implementation issues.
