I Was Almost Five is a free-verse story about a family's escape from the war that raged in the Balkans in the '90s. The story of the worst and the best of humanity is told by the family's youngest daughter, who was 5 at the time, whose perceptions Ms. Zuljevic uses to illustrate what children of war must be going through--confusion, fear, and horror. To the readers' relief, this little survivor also has the love of her family, helping her make sense of the unimaginable.
