Teachers of Érd

Byvincent zach michaelisz

Teachers of Érd My favourite place of my childhood. This story is fantasy, in the midst of a real place and in the reality of life in the police state of Communism. I actually knew a woman, who came back from emigration to England. She came back into Communism, to her mother’s house. Homesickness, they said, but hardly anybody could understand it. My story is of teachers. Homosexual love. Dangers of prejudices being made into police accusations. One lover is back from England, worked at the British Embassy. His becoming a village English teacher can smell of spying, if that is what the police wants to say. Can they survive? Does their love have a chance? Will they make a difference in the village community? Apart from Communist politics, David’s father was back from Auschwitz. He is a Jew. Can his homosexuality be accepted? From oil lamps to electricity, times do change.
