This book is a moving and inspirational record of an outstanding teacher’s fruitful life before a devastating stroke changed her life. She records her ‘recovery’ and coming to terms with her disability in a courageous way that we should all admire. Vivienne’s comment that we don’t appreciate what we have until we have lost it is a valuable lesson for us all. We should all read it.

It is my great pleasure to have met a person like Vivien, she is one of those people who when you meet her she makes you feel special and through that and her skill as a teacher I feel sure that she got some excelent results from her students. A Stroke of Bad Luck is putting it mildly what she has been through, and still has the amazing strength not only to write a book about it but to stay positive and with a marvelous sense of humour. Not only her students but almost anyone can draw strength from this book, it shows us what can be achieved if we have a will to do so. It is a privilage to know Vivien and also having been allowed into her life with this inspirational book. Viv I thank you for sharing this part of your life with us. xx

Mrs Guilfoyle taught me Religious Studies at school and she was a great teacher who cared very much about her students. I heard about her book through a friend on Facebook and had no idea she had been through such a difficult time. Viv's book is one of the most inspirational books I have read in a long time. Through her writing you feel the courage and determination that Viv had in overcoming such a life changing sequence of events. Vic's book is a very honest account of her life which she tells with a great sense of wit and humour. I have much admiration for Viv and would recommend everyone read her book to remember that when we put our mind to it we can overcome adversity. Thank you Viv for sharing your experiences and warming my soul :-) xx

Mrs guilfoyle was always one of my favourite teachers who I admired and thought was not only a lovely person who was always smiling but a brilliant teacher who you could easily aproch with any problems you had. I had no idea viv had fallen ill untill years after leaving school and when I read in the local paper she had written her own book I knew I had to read it also a friend from school messaged me to say how interesting and inspiring the book was Having had similar problems to mrs guilfoyle in my life I couldn't wait to read this book. All I can say is from the first page to the last the book totaly grips you and you just have to read the next chapter. It revealed so many stories of vivs life from start to present and really shows what a true inspiration this lady is. A highly recommend read for anyone who knows viv:))) A truly beautiful and interesting read. Love always amanda

Mrs Guilfoyle was my RE teacher. In fact she was one of the best teachers at Purbeck school helping me secure my grades at GCSE. When I found out what had happened I read her book and I am amazed at the strength of character it must have taken to go through so much and still keep your head held high. This is a very inspirational book and really puts things into perspective. I admire the strength it must take to just keep going and can only hope that I am made of the same stuff. Any student of Mrs Guilfoyle will also appreciate the funny stories of her teaching days that are dotted about in this book. Everyone should read this brutally honest autobiography. A must read Alex
